Challenges and benefits of science "The challenge of understanding the cortex is essential to attack the roots of mental and neural diseases" stressed Rafael Yuste neurobiologist. The problem is that the cerebral cortex is an emergent system —he comments—, and neurons must be recorded one by one, but also record and study all of them. "Neurons are an impenetrable jungle in which several researchers have been lost" he commented. At the conference of the Nobel Prize in Physics Claude Cohen-Tannoudji phrases such as "science is continually changing, continually improving, and therefore can improve many aspects of society, such as the living conditions of mankind or heritage" have been heard. One of the most remarkable ideas transmitted by him is that science can bring together scientists from countries in conflict, to talk and exchange ideas. He gave the example of two researchers, from Israel and Palestine. |

![]() I have a question for you... Science has throughout history had memorable moments and discoveries. If you could experience one of them, which would you choose? Who dictates the limits on the prolonging of human life, biology, ethics or the economy? In the future will all food be created in the laboratory? These are some of the questions that Elena Cattaneo, Dudley Herschbach and Pamela Diggle have responded to and commented on during this morning’s Encounter with 350 students at the Eureka! Zientzia museoa (Science Museum) in Donostia-San Sebastian. |
![]() Another way of presenting science "Another way of presenting science" is what has given the section Naukas Passion to Passion for Knowledge 2016 festival, according to Juan Ignacio Pérez, coordinator of the Naukas platform. "It is away from traditional ways, because it uses different resources and techniques, such as music, theater and humor." César Tomé platform, Natalia Ruiz, Almudena Martin Jose Antonio Perez, Helena Matute and Pablo Rodriguez participated in the second session of Naukas Passion. |

that, coinciding with the Passion for Knowledge 2016 festival, the annual meeting of the Executive Committee of the European Physical Society is being held these days at the headquarters of the DIPC in Donostia-San Sebastian? The EPS is one of Europe’s most important scientific associations. Among its members are 42 national physics societies across Europe, individuals from all the fields of physics, and European research institutions, thus bringing together over 130,000 people; “130,000 explorers who are seeking new horizons in science and who defend free access to knowledge and education,” in the words of Christophe Rossel, the President of the EPS. |

BERTSOLARIAK The creative process of bertsolaris at first hand Knowledge is not the exclusive domain of either art or science, that is why in Passion for Knowledge 2016 speakers haven´t only be talking about physics, chemistry, engineering and botany. This afternoon we have had the opportunity to have the bertsolaris Amets Arzallus, Andoni Egaña and Maialen Lujanbio in the Victoria Eugenia theatre. The session has started with free bertsos, no theme set, and it has continued with various activities such as improvisation of bertsos with a theme established, with a theme and word rhyming, with issues raised by the public (light and brain) and the intervention point run. At a given moment, they stopped singing and reflected on the creative process. They asked questions each other like "how many ideas have you considered before choosing the one you used in your bertso?" The session has passed in a friendly and humorous atmosphere. |
