Top-down day: from the universe to cells and to molecules Basque researcher Agustin Sanchez-Lavega has made a journey from our solar system to exoplanets, analyzing the living conditions in the different worlds of the Universe. After a brief review of the planets most likely to support life, he concluded by saying that "we are taking our first steps on Earth, but have no doubt that we will end up leaving our planet if we are able to survive ourselves." Elena Cattaneo has talked about Huntington disease, her research topic. People suffering Huntington have more than 35 repeats of the triplet CAG in a certain gene. They have motor disorders and mental problems. Paradogically, she and other research groups investigated the evolution of this gene, and discovered that the more repeats of this triplet, up to 35 repeats, the more neural tissue generated that species' neural system. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry Martin Karplus has talked about the role of movement in animals and molecules that make possible the movement. "Animals need energy so they can move and the immediate source of energy is the ATP molecule," he said. |

![]() Martin Karplus’s other passions Apart from science, the Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Martin Karplus has other passions: gastronomy and photography. The exhibition of photographs inaugurated today at the Aquarium comprises photos taken on his trips between 1953 and 1965 across Europe, the United States and Asia. “I wanted to take photos of everyday life because I was aware that within a few years things would no longer be the same,” said Karplus. This exhibition has been touring various countries and can be visited in Donostia-San Sebastian until 20 November. |
![]() Invisibility and metamaterials in Bordeaux Sir John Pendry has been in Bordeaux today to give the lecture he delivered at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre yesterday. Passion for Knowledge has thus been turned into a cross-border festival within the framework of Euskampus, the Campus of International Excellence of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). This activity fulfils the festival’s aim to cross the established frontiers, but not only geographical ones, because connections have been created between a whole host of cultural disciplines. |

that the Passion for Knowledge Festival 2016 is getting lots of media coverage? Any spare moments of the speakers who have come to Donostia/San Sebastian are being filled up with interviews by local and national journalists from the print media, radio and TV. So what is being seen, heard and happening in the festival is reaching the whole of the general public, and so is the passion for knowledge that is being transmitted by the guest experts. |

ROUND TABLE The creative process is similar in science and literature Itziar Laka, Rafael Yuste, Juan Ignacio Pérez and Kirmen Uribe, experts in areas as far away as linguistics, neurobiology, physiology and literature, respectively, discussed the creativity to finish the day. Key ideas transmitted and highlighted by each one, however, matched perfectly from the begining. Everyone agreed that "creativity requires technical training; the spark comes after a long time of work and reflection. " This work brings people to have many ideas, "and the only way to have a good idea is to have many bad ones". They stressed also the importance of promoting creativity since childhood, so "it is very important to reward courage, prevent children from being exposed to scorn and ridicule, which is very common in schools". |
