A walk among metamaterials and plants

Sir John Pendry talked about the doors opened to optics by metamaterials. He told, as if it were a game, that certain metamaterials can make an object invisible to observer, among others. "All this is funny for me, but it is important to provide a return to society," he said. Related to that, he said that metamaterials have improved scanners, satellite communications, etc.

The botanist William Friedman have shared a multitude of images and a few stories of the arboretum of Harvard University. "We have a camera that takes 1,000 pictures per second, and in the arboretum consisting of 15,000 specimens, I have the privilege of observing fascinating phenomena" says Friedman. However, he stressed that any of us can observe the beauty of nature; in addition, it helps to enrich the personal life of each of us.

Zientzia Kluba P4K Did you know...

that some of the speakers in this edition are old friends in the Passion for Knowledge festival? Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, Dudley Herschbach and Sir John Pendry are participating in it for a fourth time, and Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Rafael Yuste have come for the second time running. Their personal friendship with Pedro Miguel Etxenike, Chairman of the DIPC and the Passion for Knowledge 2015, plus the excellent response shown by the general public to this festival of science and outreach leads them to take time off in their busy schedules to come to Donostia/San Sebastian and spread their passion for knowledge.

ENCOUNTERS

Chatting with Nobel Laureates

The Bizkaia Aretoa in Bilbao filled with Secondary and Sixth Form students this morning on the occasion of the top@DIPC - Zientziarekin solasean! meeting. Chaired by Pedro Miguel Etxenike, Martin Karplus, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, all kinds of subjects were tackled, ranging from the importance of creativity and imagination in science to the relationship between science and technology, and touching on religious issues as well. However, they did not have the answer to several of the questions raised, “a sign that the questions were very good ones,” according to Etxenike.

In his concluding words Etxenike highlighted the fact that “rather than trying to anticipate the future, as it is unpredictable, emphasis has to be placed on education, on training the people who will make these achievements”.
